Sorry this took so bloody long, no I’m not dead.

The curse of an omega chapter 5; Wolpy’s return

For the first time in weeks the wolves of Gangvar and Logan had hope, true hope. Layak, the Ulfhedinn had come to save them. Layak was their last defence against the shadows. Layak glanced up at the moon which was high in the sky and he closed his eyes as he felt power run through his veins. He stood at the tree edge and watched the shadows part and the darkness-wreathed wolves moved forward to attack. Layak sighed and began to move as he opened his eyes which were now silver. This was his power; whenever the moon was high in the sky, Layak would gain power over water and ice. This mystical power was the magical kick that was required to beat the shadow wolves. Before Layak moved out of the tree line a white she-wolf stepped out from behind a tree. Layak seemed surprised.

“Snow? What’re doing here?” Snow inclined her head and said simply, “He’s back.” before disappearing away. Layak blinked in surprise. Slowly a grin crept across his face. Dawnsoul walked up to the silver-grey wolf.

“What is it, what does she mean?” She asked nervously. Layak turned amused eyes to Dawnsoul.

“Well, well old friend, it seems the grave couldn’t hold you after all.” He turned to Dawnsoul with his silver eyes. “It means Dawnsoul that our friend doesn’t tend to stay dead for long.” Layak laughed all the way to the battlefield leaving Dawnsoul to ponder just what he meant.

Wolpy stamped through the ankle-deep snow moodily. He was cold, grumpy and he wanted to hit something. As if on cue a shadow-wreathed wolf leapt out of the darkness and tackled into Wolpy. Wolpy yelped in surprise and threw the shadow wolf off of him. He circled the killer wolf with bared teeth. The wolf charged at Wolpy who did he last thing any of them expected; Wolpy’s fur turned dark, his eyes became two burning lights of magnesium and he punched the shadow wolf high into the air then landed with a crash fading away into non-existence. Wolpy looked at himself.

“Aw, that’s awesome.” His voice was all demonic now. “Pretty cool. I wonder if I have any powers.” Wolpy looked at a nearby tree and willed it to explode. Wolpy had to move pretty fast to avoid the tree as it fell down on top of him. Wolpy chuckled as three more shadow wolves faded into view in front of him. Wolpy got the feeling he was getting stalked. Suddenly he got an idea, he put his paws up and curled one claw on each one and straightened the other two. “I’m warning you, I’m armed and very deadly. I am a creature that makes things explode with his mind. I’m not making this up.” The shadow wolves snorted and moved in to kill Wolpy. “Warned you, POW!” Wolpy twitched his paw and the air around the shadow wolf on the right blew up. The shadow wolf was completely blown apart. Wolpy turned his magnesium eyes on the wolf on the left. “BOOM!” he twitched his left paw and the second wolf was gone in a puff of smoke. Wolpy turned eyes on the now lonely wolf in front of him. “Run. I dare you,” The wolf whimpered and ran away quickly.

Wolpy followed until he reached a huge field filled with the shadowy wolves. Wolpy was about to charge in until he saw the silver-grey wolf standing before them. Wolpy paused as something stirred in him, he…

Was running through the forests of Gangvar, supposedly to go and cry alone. Idiots, did the others really think he was that much of a cry-pup? It was ridiculous. Wolpy sped through the forest undergrowth until he saw this odd grey blob ahead of him. Recognizing him as a wolf Wolpy screamed, “Waah! Look out!” Wolpy crashed into the stranger and the two rolled over each other and finally stopped. The stranger had Wolpy in a headlock and was squeezing.

“Who are you?” He growled. Wolpy thrashed in the mysterious wolf’s grip. “Who are you?” Wolpy gasped out his name, “Wol-py.” The wolf growled and let Wolpy go, but still maintained an aggressive stance. Wolpy gasped for air as he got a good view of the cub. His wolf was silvery-grey in colour and his eyes were gunmetal grey. The cub was fairly muscled but not much taller than Wolpy was. The wolf was covered by all sorts of scars and Wolpy was quite surprised that he was still standing. ”You’re hurt.” He said. The wolf rolled his eyes.

“Nothing gets past you doesn’t it?” Wolpy retreated, ears low and squeaked an apology, “Sorry, I didn’t mean to hit you.” The wolf relaxed a bit and straightened up a bit. Wolpy rubbed his throat causing the wolf to blush.

“Sorry, I had to be sure. I’m being hunted.” Wolpy glanced around the place.

“By whom?” he whispered as though the hunters were there. The cub sighed and sat down.

“This’ll take some time to explain so I’ll cut it down a bit. I used to belong to a pack called the Stormswimmer clan. My life was perfect there. I had a mother and father who loved me and my pack mates respected me. But… one day, we were attacked. And my entire pack was killed, and I… I couldn’t do anything about it.” A tear formed on the cub’s cheek. “I was captured by the attackers and they hurt me but I managed to escape. I’ve been running for three days and well, you know the rest.” Wolpy was listening in awe and pity. He thought he had it bad, but this wolf lost his family and pack. That must be the hardest thing to deal with. Suddenly an idea popped into his head.

“I’ll be your friend,” He chirped. The wolf cocked his head to the side.

  “I’m not sure…”

“Aw, come on!” Wolpy’s tone became pleading. “It’ll be awesome, we’ll be best friends and we’ll do loads of stuff together and it’ll be so cool. We’ll be like, partners in chaos! Please…” The wolf considered it for a second then extended a scarred paw.

  “Name’s Layak.”

“Layak…” Mumbled Wolpy. He looked at his friend as he prepared for the fight for his life. He…

Was jumping through the trees at a tremendous pace, following Wolpy through the autumn forest. It’s been a few years since the met and they were now the best of friends, secret friends, doing all sorts of dangerous stuff (during which Layak had to bail Wolpy out of the sticky situations). Wolpy tripped over a vine and Layak pounced on top of him.

“Tag, you’re it.” Wolpy groaned as he got up.

“That’s cheating, you’re a monkey.” Layak flashed him a dazzling grin.

“No, I is ninja!” Layak brought his forepaws up and bounced on one hind paw. Wolpy blew a raspberry at him which Layak countered with his own.

“I wish I was like you… you’re brilliant and all, but I’m just an omega.” mumbled Wolpy. Layak sensed the yellow cub’s distress and placed a paw on his shoulder.

“Hey, you’re special too. I don’t know how, but there’s something in you that no wolf has.” Wolpy smiled at his friend’s encouragement.

“You’re the best Layak,” He laughed.

“Wolpy, I need to tell you something.” Wolpy listened intently to his best friend. Layak shuffled uncomfortably on his paws. “I got to go.” Wolpy shrugged.

“Okay, come back tomorrow then.” Layak stiffened and sighed.

“No Wolpy, I have to go, as in leave for a long time.” Wolpy went still. Layak waited for a reply of some sort, upon getting none he moved a paw over Wolpy’s blank face. “Wolpy, I’m leaving, possibly permanently I need to know what those wolves came for, why they wanted me and what this Ulfhedinn is.” Wolpy turned to Layak.

“You can’t.” He whimpered. Layak moved away.

“I’m sorry Wolpy.” Layak continued to move away until he heard a scream of rage. He turned to see Wolpy fling himself at him. Layak sidestepped smoothly and brought Wolpy into a headlock. “Wolpy, calm down,” He said soothingly. Wolpy thrashed in Layaks grip and to Layaks surprise, pried Layak’s foreleg off his neck and flung Layak away. Wolpy growled at him.

“You want to leave me?! Fine! Go, abandon me, like everyone else! No one gives a crap about Omegas! No one!” Layak backed away from Wolpy as he raged in front of his eyes.

“Wolpy I’ll come back, I promise.” He whispered at his only friend. Wolpy snorted, his face contorted in an ugly mix of betrayal, hate and despair.

“Yeah right, you’ll just leave me the moment you get some big shot friends—“ Wolpy was silenced when Layak grabbed his muzzle and jerked him close.

“Listen to me Wolpy,” Layak’s voice was choked with tears. “I need you to trust me. You’re my best friend, my true friend and the most loyal wolf I ever met. I asked you to tell no one about me and you kept my presence a secret. Wolpy, please, trust me. I’m begging you.” Wolpy’s eyes softened and his face became solemn. Layak knew that Wolpy was accepting what was going on. Wolpy sighed as Layak took his paw of his muzzle.

“Okay,” He said in a shaky voice. “This is important to you, just come back.” Layak nodded and knuckle-touched Wolpy, they retracted their paws and made exploding noises.

“See ya later.” said Layak, a sad smile on his face.

Wolpy gasped as memories of his greatest friend shot through his mind. He collapsed and his fur returned to normal. Wolpy cried out as the pain nearly made him faint. When the flashbacks stopped and the pain went away Wolpy got up shakily on his trembling limbs.

“Layak…” He mumbled. “My friend, and those things…” Wolpy was shocked out of his thoughts as he finally realized what was going on. “LAYAK!” he screamed. Wolpy charged forwards, fur turning black and eyes burning with power and barrelled into the shadow wolves.

00000000

Layak spun as he heard a distorted voice call his name out. He was surrounded on all sides and not even his skill in combat and magic could beat all these shadow wolves. In truth they just wouldn’t die. That was the problem; Layak had to use a lot of magical power to beat a shadow wolf. He thought that the wolf that roared at him was some different breed of shadow wolf. He couldn’t move, his magical power had all but drained him. Layak staggered and slumped over, losing blood. He waited for his death to come.

  He has failed.

But the blow he expected never came. Layak looked at the shadow wolf standing over him… protectively? The shadow wolf raised his paw at the shadow wolf horde and the ground became wreathed in black fire. Only a doom wolf could do that, so that means… Wolpy. Layak slowly got up and stumbled down again as Wolpy smashed the face of one shadow wolf into a bloody pulp. Wolpy powered his clenched paw into another shadow wolf’s face, sending it flying through into the others. Wolpy slammed his paws into the ground and a barrier of shadow rose in front of the enemy horde. Wolpy spun around and grabbed Layak’s paw and jerked him upright.

“Layak, you okay?” Wolpy asked. Layak nodded and grinned, “Took your own sweet time.” Wolpy snorted, “You can talk, three years you were gone.”

“I was busy and— watch out!” Wolpy turned to receive a punch from the Destroyer. He growled and pointed a paw at the massive shadow wolf, blasting him back. Wolpy followed up by grabbing his tail and throwing him into the shadow wolf army which after Wolpy’s savage assault barely consisted of a few dozen. Layak chuckled at Wolpy’s strength. “We are having an arm wrestle after this.” The doom wolf chuckled in its resonant demonic voice. The Destroyer faded from view leaving the shadow wolves alone.

“What a wuss.” Wolpy’s red scarf fluttered in the wind and a pair of angelic wings stretched out of his back, Wolpy’s tail became longer and a jagged tail blade jutted out of it. Wolpy grunted in pain and nearly toppled over, but Layak caught him and helped him back up. “Ow,” he said flatly.

“Oh, don’t be a wuss, you only—“

“Grew a pair of wings and a tail blade?” Layak chuckled as Wolpy picked himself up and grunted again. “Hold on.” Wolpy charged into the dozen shadow wolves and fire erupted from his body. For a while Layak couldn’t see through the smoke.

“Um, hello? You there?” Wolpy stumbled out of the smoke, teeth bared with a look of anger on his face. “Wolpy are you okay?” Wolpy didn’t seem to react until he looked eyes with Layak. The silver wolf froze in fear, he looked at Wolpy’s bright eyes and saw the death of everything, Wolpy’s eyes burned with all consuming anger and the need to destroy everything.

And he was looking straight at Layak with these eyes. Layak backed away from the shuddering wolf. Crackling energy built up around Wolpy’s fang filled mouth until a small orb of energy pulsed inside. Layak was no fool, he knew that despite its size, that sphere of dark energy was powerful enough to kill him. “Wolpy,” He said slowly. “I know you’re in there somewhere, come back.” Wolpy didn’t comply and for a moment Layak thought he was going to die until,

“STOP!” Layak turned around in surprise as Racher sprinted up to them.

“Racher, run!” Racher ignored him and sped past Layak. Wolpy roared and charged at Racher. “No!” Wolpy paused, his paw was inches away from Racher’s face. Wolpy looked at his paw for a second, then at Racher.

“Ra-cher?” Dark Wolpy mumbled. Racher nodded, “Yes, it’s me Wolpy.” Wolpy’s paw slowly stroked Racher’s face causing him to see his paw. Wolpy stumbled back in horror. “Racher?” he said again. The wings slowly receded as did the tail blade. Finally the shadows melted away. Wolpy stumbled forwards and said, “Racher.” before toppling over. Racher ran over to Wolpy’s prone form. Layak also padded over.

“He needs medical treatment and fast.” Racher nodded and the pair carried Wolpy back to Gangvar, unaware of the dark figure watching from the trees, he has been watching since the battle began. He took an interest in a particular wolf.

“So, a son of Furo has arisen.” He said quietly. “He will march beside a lord of death and a warrior of light, he must be the one.” The wolf turned away, glancing over his shoulder one last time. His keen red eyes scanned the field. “It seems… my hunch was right after all then.” The wolf turned and ambled away from the battleground.
